Shani Krebs was born to a family of Hungarian refugees. He grew up in a succession of mining towns and spent his teenage years in an orphanage.

In 1994 Shani flew to Thailand where he was arrested for heroin trafficking. After being sentenced to death, his sentence was communted and he was freed after spending 18 years in a Thai prison.
