Irina Filatova

Irina Filatova 02Irina Filatova is Professor of Russia’s National Research University Higher School of Economics and Professor Emeritus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. In the early 1990s she was head of the African Studies Department of Moscow State University, and then, for many years the head of the Department of History at the University of Durban-Westville.


Author of five books and about 200 articles on Africa, South Africa, Russia and the relations between the two countries. The Russians and the Anglo-Boer War and South Africa and the Communist International: A Documentary History, co-authored with Apollon Davidson, are among these. She was also the Bradlow Fellow at the South African Institute of International Affairs


Irina is also the co-author of The Hidden Thread with Apollon Davidson, a book about Russia and South Africa in the Soviet Era.
