Christo Brand copyright Alinka Echeverria 2013Christo Brand was born on a farm in the Western Cape. He trained as a prison officer. and found himself on Robben Island to guard the most dangerous men in South Africa at the age of 19.

Today Christo, 53, still works on Robben Island. He runs the bookshop there and will patiently reminisce for the hundreds of thousands of visitors keen to know about his days with Mandela. Robben Island is now a World Heritage site dedicated to Mandela’s life-long fight to liberate his people.

Christo is married to Estelle, and they live in Cape Town with their son Heinrich.
